The Hidden Resistance: When Fibroids Quietly Block Dreams of Motherhood

25 February 2026 3 min readBy Santaan Fertility Center and Research Institute

Many women in Bharat live with “heaviness” and irregular periods, not knowing that small, non-cancerous growths called Fibroids are acting as silent barriers. This post explains how these growths change the womb’s environment and how XAI helps us detect them before they block your journey to motherhood.

The Story: Meet Meera

Meera (29), from a farming family near Jajpur, Odisha, was used to hard work. But over the last year, her periods had become a battle. They were heavy, painful, and left her exhausted for days. “It’s just the stress of the harvest,” she told herself. When she couldn’t conceive after two years, she visited a local clinic and was told she had “masses” in her womb. Meera was terrified, thinking she had a life-threatening disease. She didn’t realise these were Uterine Fibroids, common growths that weren’t dangerous to her life, but were acting as a “no-entry” sign for a baby.

The Problem: The “Crowded” Womb

Uterine Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the walls of the uterus. Think of the womb as a cradle. If the cradle is filled with small “stones” (fibroids), there is no room for the baby to rest. Even small fibroids can change the shape of the womb or block the Fallopian tubes, making it impossible for the “seed” to find the “soil.”

The Causes

Hormonal Imbalance: High levels of estrogen can act like a fertiliser, making fibroids grow faster.

Genetic Predisposition: Often, if a mother or sister had heavy periods, the risk is higher.

Insulin Resistance: As we discussed in our [PCOS Blog], metabolic health and fibroid growth are often linked.

What Tests Matter

Many women are told they have fibroids, but not all fibroids stop pregnancy. The location matters more than the size.

3D Pelvic Ultrasound: To see exactly where the fibroid is located — is it inside the cavity (where the baby grows) or on the outside?

Saline Infusion Sonography: A gentle test where we use water to “inflate” the womb slightly to see if the lining is smooth.

XAI Growth Mapping: At Santaan, we use AI to predict if a fibroid is likely to grow or interfere with implantation, helping us decide if it needs to be removed or just monitored.

Treatment Options

Hormonal Balancing: Using targeted science to “starve” the fibroids and stop them from growing.

Myomectomy: A precision, scar-free procedure to remove only the fibroids while keeping the womb perfectly intact for a future baby.

Metabolic Reset: Adjusting the diet to reduce the “growth signals” the body sends to these tissues.

FAQ

Do fibroids cause cancer?

Rarely. They are benign (non-cancerous) growths.

Can I get pregnant with fibroids?

Yes, if they are small and located away from the lining. Our XAI assessment helps determine this.

Will removing them leave a scar?

At Santaan, we prioritise “womb-sparing” and minimally invasive techniques to ensure your body is ready for pregnancy quickly.

Don’t let “heaviness” hold you back. If your periods are heavy and your cradle is empty, let’s look deeper.
